This is what you might call a jigsaw of a route: so many of the pieces are familiar and you’ve seen them before. But in this configuration, they make a new picture with great views, weather permitting.
This moderate 12 miles / 19.3kms (approx) route with 1667ft/508m ascent (OS app) from Langley takes in reservoirs, canals, waterways and ridges.
Starting from the corner of Langley Road and Knotting Road, the route heads towards Birch Knoll and Macc Golf Club, then joins the canal to Sutton Hall, Sutton Village and the reservoir. After going past Hawkshead Quarry, we then climb to the radio transmitter at Croker Hill. Descending to Lower Brooms and Higher Pethills Farm, we join the path going past Ridge Hall for the final stretch back to Langley.
The route: corner of Knotting Road and Langley Road - The Hollins - Macc Golf Club - Macclesfield Canal to Sutton Hall - Sutton - Sutton Reservoir - Oakgrove - Upton Fold Farm - Lingerds Farm - Broom - Higher Pethills Farm - Ridge Hall Farm - Langley village and return to the start.
This is a mix of paths, tracks, towpaths and lanes with some muddy stretches. Poles recommended. Bring lunch, snacks and refreshments. No dogs.
