The walking route from Largs to Wymss Bay via Knockhill and Skelmorlie is a scenic 11.5-mile linear section of The Ayrshire Coastal Path. Starting at Largs Railway Station the path takes us through the heart of the popular seaside town, before heading inland and uphill across boggy ground towards Knock Hill- an Iron Age Fort. From the trig point on a clear day walkers will be rewarded with beautiful views across the Firth of Clyde towards the Clyde Islands of Cumbrae, Bute and Arran, as well as the Argyll hills and Cowal Peninsula. From here we head for Skelmorlie, the official endpoint of The Ayrshire Coastal Path, and along the way we pass the pretty hamlet of Meigle, and the impressive Skelmorlie Castle which served as the ancestral seat of The Montgomery Clan. Leaving Skelmorlie we head for Station Road, a brae, which winds its way downhill to the A78. Wymss Bay train station will be in view and marks the end of this walk
This is a linear walk
Registration for this walk opens two weeks in advance of walk (ie18th of April). Do not contact the leader before this date. Remember to include a mobile number when you sign up.
Meet outside M&S Central Station at 08.30 in order to catch the 0845 train to Largs for a 1000 start. A return Wymss Bay should be okay, but best to check with ticket office, may have to buy single to Largs and single back to Glasgow from Wymss Bay.
This is a moderately challenging walk due to the distance, and the very mixed terrain of boggy grasslands, forest trails and some short, steep ascents and descents on both hills, paths and tracks. There are also some very muddy sections, so bring poles if you use them and wear gaiters if you have them.
There will be a morning break, and lunch will be at the trig point on Knock Hill, so that we can, hopefully, enjoy the views. Please ensure you bring plenty of water to rehydrate both on after ascents.
On completion of walk and before heading for the train, there will be the opportunity to enjoy a refreshment at Wymss Bay Railway Station.
