Both walking groups will head down to the Spirit of Scotland statue at the start of the walk for a group photograph to commemorate the 35th anniversary of our club.
We head downhill across a stile and over a footbridge to cross over to the path at the foot of Loudoun Hill. The group will climb the short but steep ascent to the trig point atop of this volcanic plug(361 m). This is the site of two important battles during the Scottish wars of independence. On a clear day we will be rewarded by views over Ayrshire, Lanarkshire, the Firth of Clyde and Isle of Arran. The descent of the hill is equally steep and muddy and care is required. We then cross over to a footpath which takes us onto the old disused railway line which takes us to Darvel where the walk will finish.
Sturdy boots essential and poles recommended. The path can be muddy at parts and care is required, particularly on ascent and descent of Loudoun Hill. There will be some car ferrying required back to the cars. This is a short walk giving us time to have a cuppa together at the Dean Park Cafe, Kilmarnock after the walk (optional).
