Wirksworth, Old Porter Lane is the starting point of this exploration of Middleton Moor. We also pass through the area known as Griffe Grange, through which an old highway (variously known as the Chariot Way and Old Manchester Road) once passed, which was itself believed by many to have been part of the original ancient trackway, the Portway.
We will pass the National Stone Centre, where there are toilets. There are ascents on the early part of the walk. The return is along the High Peak Trail and we pass Middleton Top where there are also toilets, and the Stone Centre again, which also has a good café. There are a few stiles, the likelihood of coming across cattle is low.
