Leaving Flottersone car park, we walk through woodland for approximately 300 metres before turning onto open hillside, climbing steeply, but gradually up to Turnhouse Hill (506 m). The views open up and we can have a refreshment break while taking in the panarama. Beyond the main summit, the path descends to the col, before the steep ascent of Carnethy Hill (573m), the second highest summit of The Pentlands. Descending steeply we meet the path which ascends Scaw'd Law, but we take the steep descent, down to The Howe, where we will stop for lunch at the river. We take the track to Loganlea reservoir, turning off on a rough hill track which ascends to the third summit of the day Black Hill (501 m). From here it is downhill via a track to the glen which follows the Glencorse reservoir back to the cars, where there is the opportunity to have a refreshment, tea or coffee in the Flotterson Inn before the drive home.
The Pentland Hills cover a vast area and farmland with livestock. The walk is mainly on good tracks with one short section through bracken sheep trail. Poles recommended, particularly for the steep descents, where some sections have loose gravel. There is one stile crossing and narrow stream with easy crossing via stepping stones.
Travel from Kilmarnock can be via Stonehouse, Abington services and onto the A702 or via M8 to Edinburgh city bypass on A702.
The car park(donation) is busy and car sharing is recommended. Toilet facilities available.
Suggested cost to passengers £13
