Overview

There is a limit of 15 people for this walk and booking is essential.  Please book after 18 June, using the email link.

Abbey Cafe is a simple cafe that takes cash only and it has a toilet.  It serves hot drinks and meals, but not biscuits or pastries.  Please be at the cafe by 10.45 at the very latest, to have time for coffee before the walk.

After coffee, at 11.00, we will have an optional walk, mainly following the Green Chain Walk and in shade for much of the way.  We head towards the ruins of Lesnes Abbey, where there are toilets, then take a woodland route with some climbs along the way.  After 1 mile we reach bus stops at West Heath, for buses to Abbey Wood Station, then more buses at Bostall Hill (1.5 miles).  We continue through the woods and reach bus stops after nearly 2.5 miles, for buses to Woolwich stations.  We then have a longer climb, to reach Winns Common and more Woolwich buses (3 miles).  We cross Plumstead Common, skirt round the top of the gorges and then turn towards Woolwich Arsenal, passing more bus stops.  There is a possibility of tea by the Elizabeth Line Station.

Bring a picnic lunch if you plan to walk beyond Bostall Hill.  The woodland paths could be muddy in places, so walking shoes or boots are necessary.  A pole would be helpful for those who use them on descents.  We will have more rest stops than usual, to compensate for the climbs.  There are no reliable toilets between Lesnes Abbey and Woolwich, but some at Bostall Hill could be open and there are plenty of bushes.
