Overview

WALK DESCRIPTION: This is a repeat of the walk earlier this year which proved very popular. A 4.5-mile walk starting at Kings Norton train station and finishing at Longbridge station (same line). The main focus of the walk is Austin Village, a model village built by Herbert Austin of the Austin motor factory for his munitions workers in the First World War. The village comprises 200 prefabricated cedar wood bungalows shipped from the USA in 1917 and erected in a very short time.  What was a temporary housing solution survives to this day and gained conservation status in the 1990s. The first part of the walk starting at Kings Norton station follows the pleasant Rea Valley route to Longbridge;  we have a short break on the route and then take a leisurely tour of the village. There are no toilet facilities on the walk but we have the option of finishing with a tea/coffee shop close by Longbridge station. Leader: Brenda Cameron.
