This is a beautiful and varied countryside walk centred around Iping Common, making use of sections of the Serpent Trail. The route begins from the car park, heading out across open heathland creating a classic Sussex landscape. The terrain here is mostly flat and open, offering a peaceful start, often rich in birdlife and butterflies.
From the common, the path drops gently down to the River Rother, where the scenery shifts to lush riverside meadows. Following the river towards Iping, the walk becomes quieter and more enclosed, with the sound of water accompanying you. This section leads to the weir at Stedham Mill, an ideal place to pause for a break and enjoy the tranquil setting.
Continuing on, the route heads towards Woolbeding Bridge, where you rejoin the Serpent Trail and begin a steady climb through woodland. The shaded paths provide a contrast to the open heath, eventually leading up to a viewpoint near Quags Corner. This makes a perfect lunch stop, with elevated views over the surrounding countryside.
The return leg takes you across a series of commons, including The Warren, Mitchell’s Common, and Fitzhall Heath. These final stretches bring together open heathland and quieter paths, gradually leading you back to your starting point and completing a satisfying circular walk through some of West Sussex’s most varied landscapes.
Bring food and drink for a short coffee break as well as a picnic lunch, as there are no facilities along the route around Iping Common and the surrounding countryside.
The walk covers varied terrain, including heathland, woodland paths, and riverside sections along the River Rother, so walking poles may be helpful, particularly on uneven or muddy stretches.
Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a lead at all times to protect wildlife and livestock across the commons and open areas.
