Cross the A90 and visit the ruins of Boddam Castle. Follow the route of the disused Boddam railway to re-cross the A90. Then along a recent Stirling Hill Network Access path to the Buchan radar site.and on to the loch at Den Dam, where Neolithic flint mines have been found dating back 4000 years.
Cross the dam and adjacent farmland to a track leading to Denend and then by minor roads to Lendrum Terrace, the terminus of the Admiralty railway used to transport prisoners and granite. It ran as far as Peterhead Prison, where stone was broken to build the Harbour of Refuge finished in 1956.
We pass another small reservoir and a working quarry, to end up amongst many old quarries, some flooded, some not. We then pass a fine granite “powder store” to descend back to the cars.
Mostly on paths, tracks and minor roads, but the old railway line can be boggy.
