Train-based walk

Leader: David B, meeting at Walk Start

Meet point: Manchester Piccadilly station - near the ticket barriers or on the train. Drivers can park at Glossop and join us on the train at 09:05.

Transport to walk start: 08:33 train to Hadfield.

Suggested ticket: Off Peak Day Return to Hadfield £7.90.

Walk start: Hadfield station at 09:15

Waypoints: Points around the Longdendale Valley, likely to include Bottoms Reservoir, Valehouse, Rhodeswood, Torside, St James' Chapel, Woodhead. Route may be varied depending on weather on the day.

Return Services: From Glossop: x:22 & x:52 until 22:22 then last train at 22:53.

Extra: Please use the toilets on the train as those at walk start are small and not suitable for a large group. No toilets en route. Optional post walk drinks at the Distant Hills Brewery Tap, which always has a fine selection of great beer and other beverages. The walk leader will provide directions for anyone wishing to return directly to Glossop station instead of visting the Tap.

This is a delightful walk around almost the whole of the Longdendale Valley, an area not frequently traversed by the group. The views should be excellent.

Despite the long distance, the terrain is relatively straightforward. There are no obvious bail out points where public transport is available, so you will need a high level of fitness to complete the distance.

Please note it is advisable to carry at least 2 litres of water on this walk to avoid dehydration no re-fill points on route unless you have water purification equipment with you.
