Overview
This is a walk over two types of terrain. From our starting point in Kingston Lisle we’ll go northwards. The land beneath our feet forms part of the foothills of the Downs to the south, the underlying rock being sandstone and siltstones. Then, shortly before Kingston Farm, these rocks give way to Gault clay, which forms a typical Vale landscape. We’ll cross the Wilts Berks canal as we head further north, passing Broadleaze Farm. Shortly after that we’ll turn east and then south, back over the line of the canal to Sparsholt, one of the many spring-line villages that are below the Downs. From there we walk back over undulating ground, sandstone once more down below, to Kingston Lisle. So, it is a walk of different sceneries. Bring a drink, and perhaps a snack, for the refreshment stop. Park considerately in the village, on the same side of the road as The Blowing Stone Inn, which is not open on Thursday lunchtimes.
