Overview

The second of our explorations around the Derwent Valley - this time mainly on the Red Kite Trail. And a chance to glimpse Red Kites that have been brought back from near extinction through a local reintroduction project 20 years ago.

Our route starts from the Land of Oak and Iron Heritage centre on the site of the old Derwenthaugh Coke Works. We follow the River Derwent to pick up the Derwent Walk to Rowlands Gill and up to Barlow where we should have tremendous views north across the Tyne and south across the Derwent. We turn south to Low Thornley and return along the north shore of the Derwent via Scar Bank.

A mixture of woodland paths and tracks, fields and minor roads as well as a disused railway line.
