Overview

West Mendip Walkers 10.5 mile moderate walk from Alfred's Tower on the Stourhead Estate. We descend the hill from the Tower with fine views of the Brue Valley. Passing Holland Farm, we soon reach the village of South Brewham and follow a path that runs alongside the main London to Exeter railway line to Bruton. We cross the line at the station and climb Lusty Hill to reach the Dovecot where we'll have lunch, enjoying a panoramic view of the town. After descending the hill we pass through the allotments of the Hauser & Wirth contemporary art gallery and then take the path to Redlynch. We then pick up the Leland Trail which takes us in a straight line east back to Kingsettle Hill and the car park where hopefully the Alpine Coffee Company van will be open. Dog friendly with a few stiles. Livestock may be encountered in some fields.  This walk is generally level but has two steep climbs.

Alfred's Tower was completed in 1772, to mark the accession of King George III and the end of the Seven Years’ War. It’s believed to stand near the site where King Alfred the Great rallied the Anglo-Saxons in 878 before the Battle of Edington against the Danes.  The Leland Trail is named after John Leland, who was commissioned by Henry VIII to document England’s cultural and religious heritage before the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
