Overview: A circular (figure of eight) walk starting from the Wilmington Priory Car Park. A shorter walk for shorter days, passing through Alfriston twice and getting nearly all the climbing done before lunch.
From Wilmington we climb to the foot of the Long Man, around the shoulder of Windover Hill, passed our Beachy Head Marathon station and down into Alfriston (slight detour for loos). Out of Alfriston through village footpaths, by Dean’s Place then climbing the footpath running alongside the camping site. Before the summit, we turn right off the main path down to France Bottom, then climb (initially steeply, but increasingly gently) to reach the South Downs Way by the Long Barrow, where we turn left and climb until we meet the sliver of open access land and join the bridleway down to meet Comp Lane by New Barn. From there we return to Alfriston, cross the river and follow the footpath (Pilgrims’ way) through Milton Street and back to Wilmington.
We pass through Alfriston at the 1/3 and 2/3 points (approx.), making it simple to shorten the walk at that point should if needed
Loos are available in Alfriston
