There is a limit of 20 people for this walk and booking is essential. Please use the email link to book your place after 20 September.
Catch the 09.24 train from Euston, arriving Berkhamsted at 09.55. Buy a return to Berkhamsted.
There are gentle to moderate climbs in the morning and afternoon, with descents, woodland and some lovely views of rolling Chilterns countryside. Lunch is at the Red Lion, Water End, after 4½ miles. The pub serves a wide range of meals, including excellent pizzas from a wood-fired oven. If you want a pub lunch, please email Annette by close on Tuesday 14 October at the very latest.
In the afternoon we continue along the Chiltern Way to Hemel Hempstead. There are usually four trains an hour back to London.
There are sections where we walk alongside roads without a pavement, including along a busier road, and it is necessary to walk in single file when traffic is about, for the safety of all.
Please remember to walk in single file across and beside recently cultivated fields, as the minimum width of a footpath across a field is 1 metre and at a field edge it is 1.5 metres. Damage to a crop is wasted food.
During the recce, on 5 October, the path surfaces were dry. I noticed signs for gas pipe work, but an online check shows they should not restrict our access. Just in case, I have identified short detours.
The toilets at both stations are usually open. There are no drop-out points.
Walking boots are essential.
