Train based walk

Leader: Jim R (Joining at Deansgate)

Meet Point: In the waiting area above platform 14 or on the platform at Piccadilly Station. Alternatively, meet the group on the train, or at the Walk Start at Blackrod station.

Transport to Walk Start: 10:02 train from Manchester Piccadilly to Blackrod

Suggested Ticket: Blackrod Off Peak Return £8.30

Walk Start: Blacrod Railway Station at 10:35

Waypoints: Rivington Moor, Rivington Pike, Pike Cottage, Rivington Country Park, Rivington Lower Reservoir, Liverpool Castle

Return Services:  15:42, 16:42, 17:10, 17:42, 18:10, 18:42 then 10 past hour till late.

Extra: Please use the toilet on the train. There are no toilets at the walk start. Toilets en-route at Rivington Hall Barn after 6 miles. Optional drinks at the end of the walk. Please do not bring your dog (apart from assistance dogs)

We will climb up onto Rivington Moor from station.(over 1000 ft of ascent) Opportunity to stop for refreshments at Pike Cottage near the top (tea, soft drinks, snacks etc.) We will then walk to Rivington Pike, descend past The Pigeon Tower and into the grounds and gardens of Rivington Country Park built by Lord Leverhulme (of Lever Bros soap fame) in early 20 th century.

The final stretch is via Rivington village along the side of Rivington Lower Reservoir past Liverpool Castle into Horwich and back to station.

This is not too difficult a walk but there is a significant climb in first half with great views over the reservoirs and towards Bolton from the top. Mainly on good tracks and paths and will be undertaken at a steady pace.
