Walking from the Heritage Centre in Calne, we cross the Old Wilts and Berks Canal and the disused railway line path, following field paths and an estate road, through the Bowood estate.
The walk takes us along Bowood Lake, with a distant view of the House, then through woodland to Derry Hill and Studley. We then cross the disused railway line path for a second time. At this point there is an option to return to Calne by following this track all the way back to the Heritage Centre. This would shorten the walk to approximately 7m and would be (easily) self navigated.
The longer walk continues down, on a country lane, through Hazeland Mill and climbs steeply to the Dumb Post public house. Here we revert to a footpath to cross fields to the village of Bremhill. We return to the Heritage Centre by a mixture of field and urban paths. Some stiles and good views.
Bring lunch and refreshments.
Poles/sticks may be useful as it is likely to be muddy in part. Chalk can also be slippery when wet. There may be livestock en-route.
