Overview

This walk is part of a project to visit every piece of common land* in London.

This is the second of three walks to take in the large number of commons in Bromley (over 20 and I keep finding more)

This walk will visit:

  • Broomhill Common
  • Green Street Green Common
  • Darrick Common
  • Broadstreet Green and Tugmutton Common
  • [Farnborough Common]*
  • Gumping Common
  • Sparrow Wood
  • Bromley Common
  • Pickhurst Green

* Farnborough Common is in parenthesis as it isn't actually visited on the walk, however there is the opportunity for obsessive characters who want a full set of commons to walk up the hill from our lunch spot, set foot in it, and return. I have left it out because I don't like it (it has no public rights of way so you have to walk along the side of a busy A road, and it seems to be surrounded by gated communities that don't allow pedestrians through meaning that you have to walk miles on boring pavements to get back to any interesting walking areas - rant over)!

We will start at St Mary Cray station. The lunch stop will be at Broadstreet Green and Tugmutton Common which has nearby shops.

We will finish at West Wickham station (note , this is not near West Wickham Common, which will be visited in the next walk).

The walk will be at a brisk pace.

* I am defining common land to be any piece of land that is registered for the purposes of the Commons Act 2006, or is protected under separate local acts, such as Wimbledon and Putney Commons (which are protected under the Wimbledon and Putney Commons Act 1871). Using this definition not all pieces of land that are called commons are in fact commons and many of the pieces of common land are not called commons.

** I'm not altogether sure of the status of some of the pieces of land called "commons". I'm still trying to hunt down which ones that are not listed under the main act are covered by separate local acts.
