Meet on the west side of the bridge over the River Dane, near the phone box on the corner of the lane to Wincle Brewery. This is a short walk of around 4.3 miles (7 km) with a mostly uphill route. Outdooractive and OS mapping stats agree on the distance, 7 km, but they disagree on the ascent! The ascent varies quite a lot between the two, so I have taken an average, around 200 metres ascent, or 656 feet. We follow the River Dane upstream with a continuous and gentle ascent, past Back Forest Farm until we reach the turnoff for Lud’s church (not going there!). We then head more steeply up to the ridge, bypassing Lud’s church. After covering 2/3 of the walk, we start our descent back to the river and our start point, following good tracks and lanes, and through the hamlet of Danebridge. For the first three miles there are some rough underfoot patches, and it can be muddy if recent rain. Bring poles if you are used to them, and wear sturdy shoes or boots. One drink stop on the way. Sadly, the Ship Inn at Wincle is still closed, so there will be no pub stop after the walk. Well behaved dogs welcome but must be on leads at all times. (Sheep in fields and woods.)
