A pleasant, gently undulating walk across open Essex farmland and through pretty villages to Saffron Walden. There's one steady climb.
Saffron Walden is a picturesque medieval market town with a rich heritage of old buildings including St Mary's the largest parish church in Essex. I hope to have up to 2 hours in the town for you to explore and have lunch. There are no toilets before the town.
The afternoon walk to the station takes about an hour.
Lunch is fairly late, taken in one of the pubs or cafes in the town, or a picnic eaten in a park or common. Maybe eat something on the train, there will not be a food stop before the town.
Please note this walk was listed in the programme as a garden walk to Audley End. The walk remains almost the same, but after visiting Audley End I've chosen Saffron Walden as a better focal destination.
Train 10.28 Liverpool Street, 10.40 Tottenham Hale, destination Cambridge North. Buy return to Great Chesterford.
