A beautiful walk through fields and woods up onto the chalk escarpment leading away from the historic market town of Royston with its Stuart hunting lodge and Neolithic heritage. There are both short and long ascents and walking poles are essential on chalk slopes if there is wet weather. There are fine views across sweeping Chiltern landscape before and after lunch at Therfield village with its thatched cottages and secluded Elizabethan manor house.
