This walk starts from The Old Corpse Road layby at Haweswater. Taking the path directly from the layby it zig zags up past derelict buildings with ever increasing views of Haweswater behind us and cascading waterfalls on our right. The path levels off and we take care not to miss a path on our right that takes us the cairn of Selside Pike. We follow a line of high points, with our route now clearly ahead however, there are some boggy sections to navigate. We start to descend at Branstree down to Gatesgarth Pass. (Here there is an option to continue downhill and reduce our walk if the weather is bad.)
Crossing Gatesgarth Pass we head up hill towards Harter Fell, the highest part of our walk at 778ft with panoramic views. Our decent is initially steep and rocky and extra care must be take. Passing Small Water tarn and crossing the stepping stones we follow Small Water Beck. The path levels off and takes us to Mardale Head where we follow the road back to Old Corpse Road layby.
