Welcome to Capital Walkers, the friendly London Ramblers group for people aged 40+. We walk every weekend and usually at least once during the week.
The Great North Wood was a natural oak woodland that started three miles (4.8 km) south-east of central London and scaled the Norwood Ridge. At its full extent, the wood's boundaries stretched almost as far south as Croydon and as far north as Camberwell.
This is the first of two brisk walks that take you through as many of the remaining fragments of The Great North Wood as are publicly accessible.
This section will visit South Norwood Country Park, Streatham Common and a collection of smaller fragments of the Great North Wood plus a number of other green spaces that are not original woodland, but are still well worth a visit.
I intend to go a drink after finishing the walk, I hope you can join me.

Although mainly an urban walk, there will be some mud and there are hills with a total elevation gain of 320m.
We pass a couple of community cafes and will stop if one of them is open. However they are not reliable so a backup packed lunch is advised.
The finishing time is an estimate only and will be dependent on a number of factors, such as weather, the speed at which the group walks and number of stops we take.

Elmer's End Railway Station (Zone 4). Meet at the exit to the Tesco car park from platform 3. Make use of the toilets on the train or in Tesco as other opportunities are few and far between.
We will end up on Streatham High Road equidistant between Streatham Station (Zone 3) and Streatham Hill Station (Zone 3). There are also multiple buses.
