Overview

This walk takes us to historic St Albans across farmland, meadows and estate parklands. We start by setting off to the tiny hamlet of Redbournbury where we can visit the wonderful working watermill.

We then head towards St Albans on the Hertfordshire Way across lovely water meadows alongside the River Ver and into Gorhambury Estate. We follow the river for a while before crossing open parkland with St Albans cathedral prominent on the skyline. The estate includes the site of the Roman town of Verulamium although very little remains visible.

There is a short stretch of walking along busy roads before skirting around Batchwood golf club and into the beautiful Childwickbury Estate. The estate road takes us past Stanley Kubrick’s former home, Childwickbury Manor, where he lived from 1978 until his death in 1999. Finally we pick up a pretty tree lined path back to Harpenden common.
