This walk is mainly through rolling open countryside in the Chilterns AONB with some far reaching views (and more medieval history than a Bernard Cornwall novel!).
We leave Pirton via Great Bury, medieval village earthworks site, and head south west crossing open countryside to join the Chiltern Way. The walk skirts round Little Offley (late 16th c. Grade 11* listed house) and across Lilley Hoo before turning north east to follow a stretch of the ancient Icknield Way alongside Hoo Bit, Pegsdon and Deacon hills with stunning views (weather depending). We gradually descend to the Hitchin Road, then carry on along Wood Lane, passing Knocking Hoe and back to Pirton.
Points of interest along the way
Telegraph Hill - used as a semaphore telegraph station for communicating with the coast during the Napoleonic Wars
Pegsdon Hills and Hoo Bit - a Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve and Deacon Hill (Bedfordshire SSSI) with fabulous views.
Knocking Hoe - National Nature Reserve with rare plant species such as Moon carrot and Spotted Cats-ear and more views.
Toot Hill - early 12th century Motte and Bailey castle earthworks in Pirton.
This walk is mainly on made up paths. The walk is a bit hilly and there is one stile to cross.
Please park considerately in the village.
There are no toilets or cafes en route so please bring your own refreshments.
Refreshments may be available at The Motte and Bailey or The Fox pubs at the end of the walk. There is a village store on the High Street.
