A visit to one of the highlights of the Eden Valley, with wonderful views of the geological feature known as the Whin Sill. We start from the pretty village of Dufton and walk through its picturesque Ghyll to continue over farmland and a short stretch on a quiet road until we reach the beginning of High Cup Gill. We follow the course of the beck upwards as we climb, over boulders, beside scree and finishing with some fairly easy scrambling, and eventually reach its head, High Cup Nick itself. We will make a detour to Maize Beck to view the rock formations it has created before returning to the Nick and then pick up the Pennine Way to take us back to Dufton.
Some of the terrain is very rocky and steep, and other parts are quite boggy. If there has been a lot of rain beforehand and the path up to the Nick is too wet, we will go up to the Nick by a safer route, over Middle Tongue. The walk will be at a moderate pace.
