Leaving the village car park in Dufton we head first for Dufton Pike, but not up. We circle around the bottom on a good track and make our way through the old Great Rundle mine workings up to Great Rundle Tarn. From here we more or less follow Maize Beck for a couple of miles to eventually reach the bridge over the beck. The route is easygoing to start with but does become indistinct at times as we progress. After crossing the bridge we continue across the plain towards High Cup Nic and then follow the route of the Pennine Way back to Dufton.
The paths are pretty good throughout, the exception being from the Tarn, which can be soft and boggy after a spell of rain.
