A fitting finale to our 70 mile journey from London to Brighton, this is an exhilarating walk over the South Downs to reach the sea close to Brighton Pier. We pass through the pretty village of Clayton and then ascend steeply to the iconic Jack and Jill Windmills with magnificent views in all directions. The walk continues across the South Downs with some steep ascents and descents rewarded with more spectacular views. If you use walking poles, please bring them along. The route then goes through the edge of Great Wood and passes the site of the Pudding Bag Tumuli. After a steep decent to Moulsecoomb, we make a final climb up to Brighton racecourse before descending to the sea-front and a short walk to Brighton Pier.
Please bring a picnic lunch, snacks and plenty of water as there are no refreshment opportunities before reaching Brighton. Once there, of course, there are plenty of pubs, cafes, and ice-cream stalls to celebrate our achievement before catching the train back to London.
Recommended trains: either Southern from Victoria at 9.16, arrive 10.15 or Thameslink from Blackfriars (cheaper) at 9.03, arrive 10.11. Buy day return to Brighton.
