Starting from Mitcham Junction station we will follow the Wandle river all the way to its confluence with the Thames before finishing at Putney Bridge.
To join the Wandle we must first cross Mitcham common and a short road walk. This part of the river is surprisingly green and includes Watermeads nature reserve and Ravensbury park with evidence of the mills that uesd to line the river. The river then passes through Morden Hall park crossing the tram line before arriving at Merton Abbey mills. This complex of original mill buildings was associated with both William Morris and Liberty fabric manufacture but now used by independent Arts and Crafts workshops. Please bring picnic lunch to eat here; pub & cafes available for drinks.
Our route continues north following the route of the Wandle a ribbon of green made up of parks and nature meadows occasionally crossing roads and railways until we reach Wandsworth. We thread our way through the town to meet the Thames, a short stretch of the Thames river path follows before we can cross to finish at Putney Bridge station.
An ideal walk for winter as mostly on good paths.
Start and finish points both within Freedom Pass area. Possible drop out at Earlsfield station after 6.25 miles.
