BOOKING REQUIRED: This is an easy walk which starts at S. Paul's at 13.30 and ends at Smithfield. It takes about 3 hours. There are toilets at Paternoster Square by St. Paul's, the Tower of London and the Barbican. Coffee or water breaks at the Tower and Barbican. It involves pavement walking so trainers or comfortable walking shoes recommended.
The walk follows land reclaimed from the Thames where Londoners built warehouses for local grain and spices and furs from the Baltic. We will walk under modern London Bridge and if possible see a model of old London Bridge in St. Magnus. Before the Tower of London we can visit All Hallows which has medieval statues and brasses in the crypt. The Tower survived the fire and bombs unlike much of the rest of the city. After the Tower there are the remains of the Roman wall which was raised in height during the medieval period. You will see the remains of a monastery and a hospital for the victims of the Black Death. The walk will end at St. Bartholomew.
