West Mendip Walkers moderate 9.5 miles walk. From The Crown pub car park, we walk through Pilton village eastwards along minor roads and footpaths as we climb gently to cross the A361 near East Compton. From here our route takes us north westerly across grassland, with fine views to the South. We walk through the village of West Compton and across the wildflower meadows at Red House Farm, then up Stoodly Lane to arrive at Worminster. Here we’ll pause at the Mediaeval Wayside Cross. We then take a circular route across farmland up, around and over Worminster Down - at 119m - before descending southwards on the Monarch’s Way to North Wootton. Our return leg takes us through woodland and across fields from where, to the south, we’ll be able to see the Worthy Farm Valley of Glastonbury Festival fame. Refreshments will be available at The Crown.
Several moderate climbs. Very few stiles. Walking mainly along footpaths. There are a few sections on quiet roads.
Where we cross the A361 there is a short walk along a wide verge beside this fast road. Overall, dog friendly with care. Note later start time for this walk.
Please register in advance for this walk so that the walk leader can compile an accurate list of participants beforehand. Out of fairness to everyone, regular walkers with the West Mendip Walkers are asked to take their turn in leading walks, typically around two a year.
