Overview

Join us for a gentle and reflective walk through the peaceful Hertfordshire countryside. We begin at Sandridge Village Hall where there's ample parking and a chance to meet fellow walkers. From there, we stroll along the High Street, rich in local heritage, pausing briefly at St Leonard's Church, where names on the memorial invite reflection. Its flint walls stand as a quiet sentinel of centuries past, the timeworn headstones and towering yews hold the memories of those who have walked before us - lives lived, lost and remembered.

From the church, we join the scenic Hertfordshire Way, heading west towards Wheathampstead. The path winds gently through fields and beneath broad oaks and chestnut trees, their leaves turning warm shades of amber, russet and bronze - a perfect setting for reflection. The paths open up, with hedgerows lining our path and the last of the season's berries clinging to their branches. The path heads towards Coleman Green, and on to the outskirts of Wheathampstead. We join the Nomansland Common, a wide stretch of heath, once used for grazing. The name also conjures thoughts of those lost in distant wars. A little further and we have the opportunity to stop at West End Farm Barns, a working arable farm run by the Dickinson family with a strong farm - heritage vibe. The cafe barn is set in a Grade II listed building with undercover seating and homemade fayre.

From West End Barns (Nomansland) we head into Heartwood Forest where we follow paths at the edge of woodland, with plenty of open views, back to Sandridge village. There are tearooms and The Rose and Crown to enjoy refreshments at the end of your walk, should you wish.
