Overview

This is a linear walk. The cars are parked at the end of the walk (Locomotion museum/cafe). We walk to the bus stops (two) to take us to the site of the coal mines ( Witton Park ) where the Stockton to Darlington Railway started. We follow the track all eight miles to Shildon, except in two sections where private ownership causes us to divert onto other rights of way. Apart from the privately owned sections there are only two obstructions:- A house near Low Etherley, and the bridge over the R. Gaunless has been removed in West Auckland.
