Snake Path, the Mass Trespass and Dad’s Army - this walk has it all. Meet at the Sett Valley Trail car park at 10.00 SK 03588 86938.
The car park costs £7.50 for the full day and you can pay by cash or card at the machine. Toilets are available, although the gents is closed. The key to the disabled loo which anyone can use can be found in the bucket in front of the café caravan. Local street parking is also available and the car park at the (closed) Royal Hotel may also have spaces. Please park considerately.
There are some road closures in and around New Mills which could cause delays, although these could be finished by the day of the walk. Please let me know if you get caught up.
The walk starts at the Sett Valley Trail car park and goes along the trail crossing the River Sett by some fishing ponds. Cross Sitch Lane and head up towards Upper Cliffe Farm. We head down past Clough Mills and Little Hayfield. After crossing the A625 we enter the National Trust’s High Peak Estate at Park Hall Woods before a gentle climb up Middle Moor onto open moorland above Hayfield with beautiful views across the valley.
This section of the route is part of the mass trespass onto Kinder Scout and we go along the Snake Path which was opened over 120 years ago linking Hayfield and the Snake Pass.
From here, we go round Kinder Reservoir via Upper House and Booth before going down into Hayfield past the house where Arthur Lowe from Dad’s Army was born and back to the car park.
Moderate walk, approx 13.5kms or 8.5 miles, subject to any route changes.
The walk was dry underfoot but this may change if the weather turns wet. Poles if you use them are recommended.
Due to livestock in the fields, no dogs please. Bring packed lunch.
