A moderate walk of just under 6 miles (9.2 km) starting from Hartington village centre, heading north. 826 feet (252 metres) of ascent. (OS maps) Any ascents will be taken at a leisurely pace.
We will walk west from Hartington, then northwest, with a short steep ascent from the River Dove, Harris Close, High Close Farm, descend to Marty Lane (an old drovers’ route/salt way), slight ascent to Pilsbury Castle (coffee break), steady long climb from Pilsbury Castle heading southeast, skirt along the side of Carder Low, past remains of lead rakes, return to Hartington. The final 2/3 mile might need to be altered, depending on the weather and the conditions underfoot.
Can be muddy in parts if wet weather. Several awkward stiles over dry stone walls. Sheep and cows in fields.
No dogs unless they can be lifted over the awkward stiles. Any dogs must be on short leads due to the livestock.
Poles would be useful.
Bring ICE cards, plenty of snacks and a drink.
Mobile phone reception in Hartington can be poor for some providers.
