Starting at Aira Force (NT members please bring your membership cards for parking) we initially take the route of the Ullswater Way, after about a mile we turn up a farm track, passing through the farm we start to ascend. Beyond 'Seldom Seen' we turn off the main path and continue our ascent (with some fairly steep stretches) right up to the summit of Heron Pike, a great viewpoint in good weather. We then continue onwards, slightly uphill to the main summit of Sheffield Pike. Following this we continue onwards and pick up the terrace path that contours right around the Glencoyne valley, before descending and re-etering Aira Force at the Park Brow car park.
This is a strenuous walk that will be undertaken at a moderate pace. Mostly on good paths, but on a couple of occasions the paths are somewhat difficult to see due to the abundant growth of bracken, I recommend wearing trousers rather than shorts because of this.
