Our starting point is South Harting situated at the foot of the South Downs. The National Trust owned Harting Down which overlooks the village is a beautiful area of chalk downland offering wonderful views, especially from Beacon Hill, the site of an Iron Age fort. From South Harting we have a steady ascent then an undulating stretch on the South Downs Way. Beacon Hill is then approached via a fairly steep ascent at a steady pace followed by a fairly steep descent. As the distance of the walk is only mid range we won’t need to rush it.
