The only city and probably the grandest place in Hertfordshire, St Albans centre hosts many fine and historically interesting buildings, as well as its magnificent Cathedral, one of the most significant Norman buildings in the country.
On this walk we shall visit some of the interesting and most beautiful Churches in the county, as well as the Cathedral itself.
The Cathedral is one of the great sights of Hertfordshire and the exterior is matched by the inspiring interior. St Peter's Church would be an attraction in its own right, with it superb rose window and St Michael's is described as one of the most historically remarkable buildings in Hertfordshire.
Also, we shall be visiting or passing the old village of St Michael's (now subsumed into St Albans) walking along Fishpools Road, with its many beautiful houses. The 14th Century Clock Tower in the market place along with St Albans Museum and old Courthouse is next; the journey from the cells to the dock in the courtroom is an absolute must. We shall continue along St Peter's Street to the church, the site of one of the oldest street markets in the country. We can also visit the ruin of Sopwell Nunnery, Ye Olde Fighting Cocks - another claimant for the the title of oldest pub in England - as well as the Roman remains in Verulamium Park.
At the end of the walk, there is the option to visit the Museum of Roman Verulamium (the cost is £10) or you may be tempted by the Waffle House in the nearby Kingsbury Mill.
This walk shall start at 10 30 from the car-park outside the Museum of Roman Verulamium. This is a pay and display car-park and there is a fee payable. It is theoretically possible to park in the nearby streets, though you would have to be very lucky to find a space.
The Cathedral - It is intended to spend at least an hour in the Cathedral
St Albans has a multitude of restaurants, cafes and pubs.
The walk is planned to be entirely on paved walk ways, with the exemption of the visit to Sopwell Nunnery - which is optional. Even through the Parks, we can stick to paved paths.
