Arriving at Haymarket Train Station we will bus the short distance to the Water of Leith Visitor Centre in Slateford to join the Water of Leith Walkway. Following the second half of The Walkway we will pass Saughton Park, Murrayfield Stadium, Dean Village, St Bernard’s Well, Stockbridge, Cannonmills and Bonnington. The official end of the Walkway is Victoria Bridge in Leith. The historic swing bridge is currently being restored, we will walk past it and finish the walk at Ocean Terminal where there are buses, and the tram, back to the city centre. If you have the energy the Christmas Markets will be in full swing, events and attractions in Princes Street Gardens, St Andrew Square, George Street West and Castle Street. Alternatively the new Scottish galleries at the National in Princes is worth a visit.
We will stop for a coffee break when we arrive at the Visitor Centre, and a picnic lunch stop close to the Modern Art Gallery which is about half way.
It is a straightforward, flat 8 miles or so on good paths, some city pavement walking. Parts of the walkway can get quite muddy after heavy rainfall, walking shoes/boots recommended.
Please purchase a return ticket from Glasgow Queen Street Station to Edinburgh Waverley and be ready to catch the 9.15 Edinburgh train. We will alight at Haymarket and take the number 44 bus to the Water of Leith Visitor Centre. The city bus journey takes about 12 minutes and the buses run every 10 minutes.
There are a number of toilets along the walkway or very close by.
