Overview

West Cairn is the highest hill in West Lothian at 562m with views as far as Ben More and Schiehallion.

Starting from Harperrig carpark we shall follow farm tracks past Colzium then a steady slope up across rough hill farmland to the ridge. We follow this to the summit of West Cairn. We return down the east side then along Thieves Road to Harperrig Reservoir past the remains of 15c Cairns Castle.

Paths can be very boggy, especially from Thieves Road to Harperrig so hoping for some frost to make it easier going.

This should be a good workout for January.
