This is a relaxed 5-mile walk from Anniesland railway station through historic Westerton, Cairnhill Woods, and the Garscube Estate. The route follows a mix of mostly easy paths.
You can book on this walk from Wednesday, 11 February. Please remember to send your mobile number when you contact the leader.
This varied circular walk explores the garden suburb of Westerton and its picturesque surroundings. Established in 1913 on former farmland, Westerton holds the distinction of being Scotland’s first “garden suburb” and remains a conservation area with real character.
Our route begins at Anniesland Station and follows a short stretch of the Forth and Clyde Canal into Westerton itself. From here, we explore the centre of the village, climb up to the primary school and church, then continue into Cairnhill Woods — an interesting and well-cared for Local Nature Conservation Site.
The walk then descends into Garscube Estate, part of the University of Glasgow, where we follow the River Kelvin along to Dawsholm Park before returning to the canal for the final stretch back to Anniesland.
Expect a mix of history, green space, and canal and riverside scenery. Although the walk is mostly on good paths, it can be a bit muddy in places and there are a few gentle climbs.
We'll stop for coffee, weather permitting, in Cairnhill woods or on the Garscube Estate so please bring something to drink and a snack.
There are toilets at the library in Westerton (about 1.5 miles into the walk) and coffee shops and bars at the end of in Anniesland.
