Overview

Starting from the large lay-by just outside Grasmere, we will take the good but steep path up to the beautiful Alcock Tarn where the views to the south and the west will start to open up. From here we will walk along the terrace path onto the west ridge of the Fairfield Horseshoe.

We will then walk along the ridge taking in Lord Crag, Heron Pike and up to the highest point of our walk, Great Rigg with extensive views around the whole horseshoe all the way along the ridge.

Finally, we will retrace our steps off Great Rigg and bear off to descend to our final top of the day - Stone Arthur which, although small in height, has some fantastic views over the pretty village of Grasmere and the surrounding fells. We then make our way down on a steep but clear path back to the start.

All ascents will be taken at a moderate pace.
