A walk exploring both sides of the East Allen valley and combining outstanding moorland views with lead mining heritage and a delightful stroll along the infant river.
On leaving Allenheads, we head up through a plantation to open moorland, crossing Blackleugh Burn, until we meet the Carriers Way. We then drop down past the remains of Allenheads smelt mill to reach the bridge at Dirt Pot. From here, we follow the river, crossing it to head steeply up to Fell View. After crossing the B6295, we continue climbing up a grassy track and then a rough track to the Rookhope road. From there it is a short steep descent back to Allenheads and refreshments at the Hemmel Cafe. There will also be a coffee stop and lunch stop en route.
Advance booking is required for this walk. To reserve your place, please e-mail the walk leader, Cath, through the contact box above.
