A walk around the upper reaches of the Nent and West Allen rivers where mining shaped the landscape and Isaac trod the hills and valleys.
Our walk begins in the car park of the vast Nenthead mine and smelting mill complex. Making our way through Nenthead (celebrating its 200th year of founding by the London Lead company) we follow Isaac’s Tea Trail along the Nent noting the mining remains at Wellgill, Bloomsberry and Hagg’s Mine. Crossing the Nent the route passes Galligill and Nenthall and the mine entrance near Lovelady Shield hotel. From here we ascend past the hotel and along the valley (with a short section on a minor road) to pick up a good track that winds its way up to Wellhope Moor and its mines (including the site of an aerial ropeway that took ore to Nenthead).
A bridleway takes us across grassy moorland to Wellhope Burn and up to Peter's Pit above Carrshield. From here we follow a good bridleway contouring around the side of The Dodd to the county boundary. We are then reunited with Isaac’s Tea Trail as we descend via Roughside back to Nenthead.
A mix of tracks, field and moorland paths and minor roads - several stiles and stone stiles. Extensive views and the heather on the surrounding moors should be in full bloom!
