Join us for a gentle circular walk through some of North Hertfordshire's prettiest countryside. We begin at Ashwell Springs, where clear chalk water rises and flows across the stepping stones - a tranquil and picturesque start. The walk offers a blend of open countryside, village charm, and gentle adventure, ideal for anyone who loves quiet paths, big skies and a touch of local history.
From the springs, the route climbs past Springhead and we join a quiet track to Northfield Road where there are open views across rolling farmland. Turning west we follow a footpath along the edge of the road towards Common Lane, and on to Hinxworth. Here we pass through the peaceful churchyard of St Nicholas' Church, with its ancient yews and weathered gravestones making it a quiet haven. With its many benches it makes an ideal refreshment stop. Continuing on past Christopher's Wood and Pulter's Farm. The path rises gently over Ash Hill where the views stretch for miles - a perfect spot to pause and take in the open countryside and the local pig farm, with its contented grunts of free ranging pigs, a reminder of the area's agricultural roots. From here we descend back into Ashwell where the soaring spire of St Mary's church comes into view. We walk back through the village rich in character and history, even boasting its own museum with its displays of everyday village life from Stone Age to present day. It is only open on Sunday afternoons from 2.30pm and Bank Holidays.
There is a chance to stop for refreshments at The Bushel and Strike, a welcoming village pub or there is Rhubarb and Mustard tearooms on the High Street. We return through St Mary's Church and back to Ashwell Springs.
Warm clothing and sturdy boots are recommended as paths may be muddy if there has been rainfall. There are no toilets or cafes on this route so a hot drink, water and a snack are recommended.
Parking is on the street near the Ashwell Springs. There is ample parking but please be mindful of residents and park considerately.
