A popular circular walk around the South Tyne with its interesting history and well-worn routes.
We leave the carpark and head NW through woodland and open pasture to Bridge End (you may wish to use walking poles on a short, steep descent on ancient steps down through the woods). We head south, following the river South Tyne past Featherstone Castle and the remains of the PoW camp, briefly joining the road near Lambley mine water treatment works. Heading west across fields, we join the Pennine Way then leave it to pass through Lambley village. Crossing the South Tyne on a footbridge, we will have a fine view of the viaduct (which is currently closed to walkers) and the river. We continue via Ashholme to Coanwood and return on the South Tyne Trail.
There are several stiles on this walk.
