Not to be confused with Whernside, which is at Ribblehead, Great Whernside is above Kettlewell in Wharfedale, and despite being called "Great" it is actually 32 metres lower than the Whernside-without-the-Great! Anyway, it's a great walk, though strenuous.
From Kettlewell we follow Dowber Gill and then start the steady but steep climb up to the summit of Great Whernside. We then follow the ridge line north to Black Dike and then a well defined path generally west to the village of Starbotton. Crossing the River Wharfe we then follow the riverside path back to Kettlewell.
