The walk begins in Tonbridge, then heading west, following part of the route of the eastern defensive stop line from WW2. Along the route we will see 7 of the remaining pillboxes. We walk north towards Hildenborough, then crossing farmland and woodland down towards Leigh where we stop for a picnic lunch. We then head back towards Tonbridge via Leigh flood barrier which is undergoing major works, walking back along the River Medway, ending the walk back at Tonbridge Castle.
The route is mainly flat with 2 stiles with some road walking. There are a couple of fallen trees to navigate. The paths around Leigh can be muddy and slippery this time of year. Please wear suitable footwear and walking poles may be useful. Please bring a picnic lunch.
The start point is a 10min walk from Tonbridge Train Station. If driving, there are many car parks in Tonbridge, but please look at the car park charges. Some of the car parks at the north end of town (Upper Castle Field and Botany Car Park) are short stay and prices increase if you park longer than 4 hours. Prices are lower at the Sovereign Way car parks and Lower Castle Field car park. Car sharing is recommended to spread the cost, or coming by train.
No dogs please as we pass through fields with sheep.
