A reasonably level circular walk incorporating field edge paths, tracks, riverside field walking and some short sections of road. Fine views from Caulkleys Bank.
Starting from Hovingham we will walk eastwards before turning to the north to pass South Holme Farm, after which there will be a short ascent to Caulkleys Lane before descending to West Ness. We then walk alongside the River Rye to Nunnington where we turn south and head up to Caulkleys Wood. After Stonegrave and passing by the Minster, we meander across Hovingham Carrs back to the start.
Field edge paths, tracks and some road walking.
Between West Ness and Nunnington we came across a herd of inquisitive bullocks who calmly walked to within 5 metres for a 'chat', and stayed at a similar distance whilst we walked around them. In the next field there were three horses who were totally disinterested.
After Stonegrave there was a small calm group of bullocks who were easily discouraged using the Ramblers approved hat waving technique.
There is a tendency for the route to become muddy in parts after periods of rain.
