To quote Wainwright : 'This high level traverse of the plateau splendidly reveals the topographical details of the Howgills'. We start at Carling Gill Bridge on Howgill Lane, south east of Tebay. We climb steadily via Back Balk, Knowles and Langhaw to Fell Head (2100 feet). We then traverse around Long Rig Beck to Bush Howe and White Fell Head ( 1950 feet) and then to the Calf (2100 feet). After lunch, we retrace our steps to White Fell Head and then turn left down White Fell towards Castley Wood. There is a stream to cross ( see photo). Finally an easy 2.5 mile walk back along Howgill Lane to Carling Gill Bridge. Teas will be at Tebay Truck Stop.
This is a challenging long walk on exposed hills. The walk is undulating with two steep climbs ( 200 feet) at Langhaw and Breaks Head. All paths are grassy and well defined. The pace will be steady. Off road parking available at Carling Gill Bridge. Do not attempt to drive from south over Crook of Lune Bridge...about 3 inch gap either side of my mini countryman!
